Starting a winery is a very expensive undertaking.  Unlike many businesses, a winery requires both the raw good, manufacturing and retailing of the product.  The actual costs to start a winery is going to vary dramatically depending on where you are located due to land prices but also the level of finishing for your building.  These costs are representative for a smaller volume winery that isn’t located in California.  That being said, here are some considerations of costs to start a winery.  While your actual costs will vary, as individual wants and needs will influence the cost, here are some guidelines to what it costs to start a winery.

Costs to Start a Winery

Land & Building: $200,000 – $2,000,000

  • Land: $50,000 – $1,000,000 (assuming 5 – 20 acres between $10,000 -$25,000 per acre, but can go much, much higher depending on location)
  • Construction: $150,000 – $1,000,000  The construction costs will vary the most out of all of the costs as one can go with a small pole barn style building to a chateau.

Vineyard Expense: $13,125 – $75,500

  • Tractor & Spraying equipment: $10,000 – $30,000
  • Posts: $1,000 – $20,000 (250 posts/acre @ $8/post, .5 – 10 acres)
  • Wire: $1,000 – $3,000
  • Plants: $750 – $15,000 (500/ acre @ $3 each = $1,500/acre, .5 – 10 acres)
  • Initial chemicals: $375 – $7,500 (~1.50/vine, 500 vines/acre, .5 – 10 acres)

 Winery Equipment: $152,000 – $1,157,000

  • Receiving & Crushing: $15,000 – $150,000
  • Fermentation & Storage: $50,000 – $250,000
  • Cellar Equipment: $10,000 – $40,000
  • Bottling Line: $5,000 – $65,000
  • Initial Wine Making Supplies: $2,000 – $10,000 (Yeast, dry ice, etc)
  • Material Handling: $5,000 – $60,000
  • Refrigeration: $40,000 – $150,000
  • Cooperage: $25,000 – $400,000
  • Tasting Room: $0 – $40,000

Other Initial Costs: $17,700 – $167,900

  • Bonding: $300 – $500
  • Initial Marketing: $4,000 – $20,000 (Label design, website, brochures, etc)
  • Initial Bottling Inventory: $3,000 – $7,000 (Labels, bottles, corks, foils)
  • Initial grape inventory: $8,400 – $80,400 (1 ton of grapes = 150 ~gallons or 750 bottles.  Price per ton depends on variety but we will assume $1,200. Also assumes 1,000 – 10,000 gallons produced )
  • Office Equipment: $2,000 – $60,000

Total Costs to Start a Winery: $182,825 – $3,400,400
